What is Illodeli.com?
Illodeli.com is a place on the web where you can come and buy artwork for your publication at reasonable prices, very simply. With a minimum of fuss you can register, browse our categories, pick what you want to buy and then receive a link to your purchased artwork at print ready resolution.
How come this great art is so cheap!?
It’s so cheap because you are buying Non-Exclusive, Single Use Rights by which you are licensed to use each picture you buy once in one product. This offers you the ability to buy all the art for your book, in one place, in one fell swoop, and stick to your budget!
Our stock is hand selected from our contributors’ practice files, old archives, experiments and so on. Art that otherwise wouldn’t be doing anything. So its available to you here at a great price.
So explain to me what I’m buying again?
By paying for and downloading images from illodeli.com you agree to our terms. We like to keep things simple, and we assume we’re all friends here. So our licensing is simple: When you buy a piece of art that is not a spot or filler piece, you can use it once in a single publication, including reprints of that publication. You can buy a single piece more than once if you wish to make multiple use. The “spots and fillers” category is an exception – you may use those images as much as you wish in any single publication. We also allow you to use any art you buy to advertise the publication that contains it.
So you see our art is not quite stock art that you buy and use as much you wish, wherever you like. And nor is it bespoke commissioned art with its accompanying expense. Hopefully its a satisfying middle ground that makes sense for the publisher on a budget who still wants a good looking product.
This policy lets us keep our prices as reasonable as possible and favours the most common way art is used in gaming products – just once. It also attracts quality creators to sell their work on our site. The copyright to the art rests with its creators – they are just leasing you one time, non exclusive rights. This means other people may well buy the same art as you.
We allow you to make sensible, good faith changes to our art. You may crop an image to fit your products, but you may only use the image or part of it once. No chopping them into tiny bits and scattering them about. Simply because we like to keep things simple. We ask that you do not enlarge images beyond their current resolution. Everything is provided at 300dpi suitable for print use. In pdf publishing where resolutions may be lower we kindly ask you work in good faith and respect our creators. We won’t hunt you down if you use an image slightly larger. But if you bought a filler piece, please use it as a filler, not as a cover. Part of the deal is the designated usage.
If you have more complex demands than our art here can fulfil, feel free to contact our contributors and speak with them direct. They all work to order on bespoke commissions, and may negotiate a deal with you.
Equally if you have any questions about our licensing, and would like to talk about something more than we regularly offer, like exclusivity or reuse, then by all means get in touch.
What is the precise license? Can I see it before I buy?
Sure. You can see it prior to check out your cart by clicking “terms and conditions”. But here it is in full:
By purchasing a download from illodeli.com you agree to be bound by our terms and conditions. Artwork is sold on the basis of a single use, non-exclusive license.
In plain English this means:
You may use the piece of artwork once in a single publication. The exceptions to this are filler/spot illustrations which may be used as many times as you desire within one publication.
The copyright to the illustration remains with the artist, who is granting permission to the purchaser to use the illustration once.
Other customers of IlloDeli may also buy the same image and use it. That’s the “non-exclusive” part.
If you wish to use an illustration more than once in a single publicaiton, or in multiple publications then you simply need to buy it again.
The reason we use this kind of license is because we understand that at certain times buying all rights, or exclusivity to bespoke artwork can be a waste of resources. We would rather you were able to put valuable time and money into ordering bespoke art for when it really counts than in every last instance.
The less exclusivity and re-use we offer with each purchase, the cheaper we can make our illustrations. Given that most art is only used once per book (fillers/spots notwithstanding) we’ve taken that as the baseline of our rights and pricing.
As the purchaser you have the right to crop the work to your needs should that be necessary.
You may reproduce the artwork smaller than the size it is downloaded at, but we ask that you respect the sizes given in each category. This give e-publishers a certain amount of wiggle room, since they are generally working at lower resolutions than print. And we are fine with that. But please, no buying quarter pagers and reproducing them as covers!
We request you do not use downloads from Illodeli.com to make derivative works – processing with filters, recolouring, making heavy colour adjustments. Over laying of trade dress, logos and so on is fine. We like to keep things as simple as possible, and offering artwork to you the customer, to be used as closely to its downloaded state is our aim. There are potential legal implications to allowing the use of our work to make derivative works which we would really rather not get into. We hope you understand. All artwork should be credited as (C)2008 the artist. If you wish to mention Illodeli.com that’s greatly appreciated, but we do not demand it. Hopefully as a customer you will be satisfied enough to mention it to your friends in publishing anyway! If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact us. We would much rather deal with a “silly” question than leave you guessing.
All our artists also provide bespoke work to order, and can be contacted through the links on this site to make deals outside of IlloDeli. We do ask that of course you don’t bother them by offering less money for the same rights we sell here – the whole point of the site from the artists’ perspective is to cut out all that unnecessary communication and allow you to buy direct from Illodeli. However if you like what you see and you’d like to commission more in a similar vein, to order a special bespoke piece, or you’d like to talk about exclusivity, then by all means drop them a line.
By offering this service we recognise are taking something of a risk. We aren’t going to be able to track every use of our work as sold through this site. But we do hope that you respect our work, and respect the service enough to honour our terms. In that way we can continue to provide what we feel is great art at a great price delivered quickly and simply to your desktop. The better it works out, the more stock we will add, the more artists we will bring on board, and the better it will become as a resource for our customers. Of course if it turns out the temptation not to comply with these conditions is too great then we reserve the right to cancel membership at any time without notice. If such a situation was regularly to come to pass then we would clearly have to rethink the whole enterprise. So please let’s all play fair!
Thank you for ordering from illodeli.com. We hope you find your artwork attractive, useful and a lucrative investment!
By registering or making a purchase you agree that the email address you have supplied us with is valid, as this will be the means of delivery for your artwork.
The license on any artwork which has not been paid for due to technical fault or complications with third party payment processors is not valid until the account is settled.
These terms and condition may be changed at any time without prior notice.
I can’t get the site to work – there’s no “buy” or “add to cart button” and I can’t see any bigger art when I click on the thumbnails! What’s the problem?
Illodeli.com doesn’t work well with Internet Explorer 6. We’re looking into the issue, and we hope to find a solution. For the time being though, IE6 and Illodeli.com just don’t get on. Every other browser we have tested seems to work just fine.
What are your requirements in terms of credits for the artists? Do I need to credit Illodeli.com in my product?
We ask that you credit our artists in the same way you would do normally with any other contributor – just the artists name, which is in the title of every product we sell. You are not required to credit or mention Illodeli.com, but you may do so if you wish and that would make us very happy.
A lot of this art seems to be to do with role playing games and that kind of thing. Can I use your work on my novel or board game?
Sure. Provided you follow the license you can use our artwork non-exclusively and one-time on any product you like.
I want to use the art I have bought for a different usage than the category it was listed in. Can I do that? Can I put a quarter pager on my cover?
The pricing of illustrations is a crazy world, with some truly bizarre traditions. However we tend to stick to many of these traditions to keep some semblance of consistency with the rest of the illustration world, and our day-to-day work as illustrators. This means the answer to this question is, in short, “no.”. We do not allow quarter pagers to be used as covers for example. Covers work harder as illustrations, and are traditionally priced higher than interior art.
Based on our customers invaluable feedback we have upgraded some products originally listed as half or full page interior pieces to include a new cover use option. You can find these in the “Covers” section. If you see something in our range which you would like to buy differing usage for, then please by all means send us an email. We will more than likely provide a customised product specifically for you within a day or two. Our software is that good!
Understandably as working illustrators we don’t want to lose out on cover rates by allowing interior pieces to feature on covers. Equally in the other direction we don’t want to sell you a more expensive cover for internal use. So do get in touch with any queries!
How do I access the files I have paid for?
Once you proceed through the payment process an email will be sent to the address you registered with containing download links to the files you have ordered. Each file will have its own link, to save you suffering one huge download, you can receive your art in small bites.
A history of the files you have downloaded is also available in ‘Your Account > Your Downloads’ where you can re-download files you have purchased single rights to up to 3 times. This covers you in case you lose a file, which we’ve all done at some point. Whilst you can download the work up to 3 times, you still only have one use per purchase.
Who owns and runs Illodeli.com?
Illodeli.com is owned by Jon Hodgson, Andy Hepworth, Scott Neil and Scott Purdy. All illustrators working within the gaming field. The site was designed and is maintained by Ben Powis, with some help from Jon.
What should I do if things go wrong?
Don’t panic! We’re regular guys and gals just like you, and we want your experience here to be a good one. In the unlikely event that you do run into a problem, write us an email and we’ll sort out whatever the problem is. We won’t run off with your money, or leave you stranded without a ride.
I’m an artist and I want to sell my work via Illodeli.com!
Bear with us. We’re just getting started. At some point we hope to extend our services to hand picked artists who we know can provide work of the quality we are looking to represent. Our core mission is to provide quality, not just quantity. So when we do expand it will be a “don’t call us we’ll call you” situation. But hey, we appreciate your interest!
Update Feb 11 2010: This is important. If as an artist you were to sell work with us in the future it would be absolutely vital that we could communicate easily with you. Sometimes we need files in a hurry. We need to know you can understand our criteria for putting work on the site, and the licensing. A very, very simple acid test for this is whether you can read the above statement and understand it. When we say “we are not looking for anyone” that means precisely what it says. By hassling us anyway with multiple e mails all you are showing is that you can’t read instructions. And that does not endear you to us one bit. Apologies for being so harsh – we’ve all been hungry artists in our time, so we sympathise. But please, respect our right to decide how to run our own business. Thanks!
Ok, so why do I need to register an account to buy stuff, and what do you do with my personal info?
The way our e-commerce software works means we need you to register with us. We also like to have a record of who had bought what. We’re not selling the copyright to our work, so its nice to know who has permission to use it. And that protects both parties in the unlikely event of a dispute in the future. We can just check our records to see that you bought something. Makes sense to us!
The only other thing we use your contact email for is to send you a newsletter specifically about Illodeli.com. Which we hope you will find useful. When we have nothing to say we don’t say it! When there are upgrades and new stock added then as a prospective customer we figure you might like to know. We promise not to contact you about anything else, nor do we share your details with anyone else. Hey! You’re our customer.
Run that license by me one more time. Just quickly?
Register with the site. Add your selections to your basket. Pay for them via PayPal. Get a download link via email. Download your work at print resolution. Use each image once in one product. You may use art from the “Spots and Fillers” categories as much as you like in one product. Use the work in the good faith it is provided – you can resize and crop it a little bit to fit your products, but please stick the usage categories. So no covers made from quarter pagers. You can use the work you bought for your book to advertise your book too. If people are just rotten to us and cheat us we’ll close the site down, and then who’s won? You’ve been silly, you’ve spoiled it for everyone!
